BIO
Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola is a trans-disciplinary artist working primarily in time-based art, interactivity, and performance. Her work focuses on the intersections of race, gender, and ethnicity. Along with her artistic practice, Aderemi-Ibitola also works as a devised theatre practitioner, performance studies scholar, and teaching artist.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1993, she immigrated to the United States in 2000. Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola earned her Masters in Performances Studies from Tisch School of the Performing Arts, New York University, and holds a Bachelor's in Television/Film Production and a minor in Political Science. She is based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola is a trans-disciplinary artist working primarily in time-based mediums, interactivity, and performance. Along with her artistic practice, she also works as a devised theatre practitioner, performance studies scholar, and teaching artist. Aderemi-Ibitola was born in Lagos, Nigeria January 21st, 1993. Her family immigrated to the United States in 2000 and where she participated in dance and theatre as a child. She moved back to Nigeria is 2014, where she is now living and working.
Aderemi-Ibitola has shown at numerous international exhibitions for video, performance, and time-based installations. In 2018, She won the Art X Prize for her interactive digital art piece Scraps From Mama's Floor; the prize-winning code weaved computer vision with video composite images of Lagos to speak to the labor of women. Aderemi-Ibtiola has been heralded as "Digital Arts Innovator," and has become known for her work dealing with ideas of blackness and womanhood. Her international exhibitions include Videoex Festival in Switzerland, Videonale, and transatlantic visual exchange among others. Aderemi-Ibitola was an art resident at ZK/U Berlin Center for Art and Urbanistics (2016), Khoj International Artists' Association (2017), and Festival Theaterformen (2018), Gasworks Gallery London (2019) and others. She has given talks at the Queens Museums NYC (2018), New York University (2018), and the South London Gallery (2019), among others.
She has also made an impact with her devised theatre practice. Aderemi-Ibitola began her devised theatre career in 2013, winning two national awards as part of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for Distinguish Production of a Devised Work and Distinguished Performance and Production Ensemble. She later went on to perform in other award-winning productions and developed her practice as a teaching artist and performer focusing on social issues and utilizing digital media in her shows. Under the direction of the noteworthy director of the critically acclaimed show Hear Word!, Ifeoma Fanfunwa, Aderemi-Ibitola was a project led and dramatic teaching artist for True Talk Naija! a devised theatre project focused on Nigerian college-age women and the gender-based violence they face. The show went on to tour the country featuring at Obafemi Awolowo University Woman's day celebration, University of Lagos, and Lagos Theatre Festival as well as other satellite performances. Her style of performance teaching focuses on physiology and somatic responses. She developed her teaching practice at Rue14 Studios where she worked with children ages 3.5-17 developing devised theatre pieces and at her several devising workshops aimed towards adults who are not trained performers. In 2017, Aderemi-Ibitola developed Night of More a devised theatre production centered around forced relocation in Lagos. Her other devised theatre initiatives include Moving Still: How Do We Go From Here?, an exploration of the Colonial Neighbor Archive in Berlin's Savvy Contemporary as well as work at the Ebute Metta Railway Running Shed Community and others. She has been invited to perform all of over the world most recently Palais de Tokyo in Paris, France as a performance resident (Spring 2020- Rescheduled due to COVID-19).
Locally, Aderemi-Ibitola has participated in exhibitions at Art 21, African Artist Foundation, White Space, and Lagos biennial (2017), among others. Aderemi-Ibitola has featured in contemporary art magazines such as Contemporary&, Oxosi, Nataal, and national newspapers such as Punch Newspaper, The Guardian, ThisDay, and Vanguard. And has been mentioned in international publications such as the BBC, Vogue, New York Times among others.
Aderemi-Ibitola considers her art practice as a series of visual treatises. Aderemi-Ibitola incorporates elements of performance theory and philosophy into her work to develop "points of interpolation" to spark "tangential possibilities." In the development of her visual art, much like with her devised theatre practice, there is an emphasis on bringing disparate and disjointed elements together and forming cohesion through collage, object poetry, and metonymic representations. For Aderemi-Ibitola, "art should be collaborative"; her work often involves aspects of interaction and audience performance. Aderemi-Ibitola returned to Nigeria after earning her first degree in 2014, and began her art career, focusing on finding ways media and the arts could be used evocatively to stir thought and provoke change. In her schooling and as a maker, Aderemi-Ibitola has picked up a variety of skills to produce works including sewing, welding, construction knowledge, sculpture, painting, general chemistry, drawings, performance, coding, video editing, healing rituals, and others and she has developed herself in the realms of empathy, compassion, spirituality, ethics, and philosophy. Aderemi-Ibitola earned her first degree in 2014 in Film/Digital Storytelling with concentrations in digital art and new media; she minored in Political Science. Aderemi-Ibitola earned her Masters in Performance Studies from Tisch School of the Performance Arts, New York University in 2018. Aderemi-Ibitola continues to further her studies; she has completed certificate courses in Brain Health, global healing practices, meditation, and other topics.
